SUMMARY:Community Open House + Presidio Speaker Series: The Future is Shared
DESCRIPTION:Climate commitments are easy to make. Turning them into meaningful action is much harder. The Future Is Shared will explore what corporate climate responsibility looks like in practice\, and what it takes to move from ambitious goals to decisions\, investments\, and programs that deliver real impact. \nThrough Presidio’s Community Open House\, students\, alumni\, prospective students\, practitioners\, and neighbors will join a conversation led by Jim Giles\, Vice President and Editor-at-Large at Trellis Group. Jim’s work examines why some companies develop genuinely impactful climate programs while others struggle to translate commitments into action. Together\, we’ll consider how responsibility for climate action is shared across companies and the larger systems they influence\, how we evaluate whether climate strategies are working\, and what more meaningful corporate action might require. \nNote: The Presidio Speaker Series: The Future Is Shared begins at 5:30pm.

SUMMARY:Reuse in Art\, Reuse in Life: A Conversation Between Ali Gass and Phoebe Schenker
DESCRIPTION:Join Alison Gass\, Founding Executive Director of the ICA San Francisco\, and Phoebe Schenker\, Executive Director of Reuse Alliance\, for a wide-ranging conversation about reuse in contemporary and historical art and why it is more relevant than ever. \nThe discussion will explore the many ways artists have engaged with reuse\, from incorporating found and reclaimed materials to making reuse itself a central subject of their work. Together\, Gass and Schenker will consider how reuse connects to broader cultural conversations about creativity\, sustainability\, consumption\, and value\, while also exploring how reuse can become a creative practice in our own everyday lives.

SUMMARY:National Reuse Day
DESCRIPTION:What better way to celebrate National Reuse Day than by spending time reflecting on how you can up your reuse game! \n\n\n\nWhat is reuse? \n\n\n\nLet’s start with a refresher on reuse. What is it\, and why is it important? The United States EPA has a quick video on the Story of Reuse (YouTube) to get you started. Sesame Street even has a great earworm for you with Elmo is a Reuse Grouch with Oscar (YouTube)! Reusing items multiple times before they eventually end up in the trash or the recycling bin is a great way to extend the life of your items. Reuse also helps keep useable goods out of our waste stream and reduce the need for manufacturing and transporting new goods. \n\n\n\nYou will often hear reuse and recycling used interchangeably in TV shows and media stories. So what is the difference? SimplyInfo (YouTube) has a simple explanation. The objective of reusing is “to extend the life of a product” while the objective of recycling is “to use basic material in the creation of various products.” Reuse doesn’t change the original form of an item but could change what it is used for. Recycling is the process of using the material from the recycled item to create a new product. \n\n\n\nHow to reuse more \n\n\n\nHere are some of our favorite tips from past blogs: \n\n\n\n\nReuse is critical to helping save the environment because it cuts the amount of waste going into our landfills and it conserves resources needed to manufacture\, package\, transport and dispose of unneeded new items. Read our blog\, Buying used stuff: Critical to helping save the environment\, for more information and tips for getting started.\n\n\n\nHalloween doesn’t have to mean buying new stuff that will only be used once. Learn four ways to have an eco-friendly Halloween this year and how to find unique costumes.\n\n\n\n\nThere are so many great ways to reuse. What will you choose to reuse next? Here are some ideas: \n\n\n\n\nRent or borrow lawn equipment to clean up your fall yard\n\n\n\nSell used sports equipment that no longer fits\n\n\n\nBuy used equipment if you need to replace something \n\n\n\nHand down or donate the couch that no longer fits in your space\n\n\n\nUse reusable containers for your kid’s school lunches\n\n\n\nSave flowerpots for next year’s garden\n\n\n\nDonate clothes that no longer fit to a local thrift store\n\n\n\nPost scrap lumber from your home project to Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor so a neighbor can use it\n\n\n\nHang on to your ice cream pails to use for storage\n\n\n\nSell your used vehicle instead of trading it in for scrap\n\n\n\n\nThere are so many ways to reuse in every aspect of our lives – you may already be doing more than you realize!

SUMMARY:SRJC Green Living Fair
DESCRIPTION:Santa Rosa Junior College will host its fifth annual Green Living Fair\, a free event teaching sustainable choices and offering services to reduce waste\, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Bertolini Quad. \nSRJC clubs\, local groups and organizations will host demonstrations and provide services focused on reusing\, recycling\, composting and gardening to promote sustainability. Attendees can also bring items that need repair — such as clothing\, electronics\, bicycles and appliances — in order to reduce waste. \nSRJC fashion students will operate a mending bar where they will sew or alter clothing brought in and add patches or decorative stitching to it\, as well as provide basic mending supplies for attendees to take home. \nFashion Studies Program Coordinator\, Emily Melville said that the Mending bar helps bring life into garments that have had previous rips and stains\, and inspires people to have a deeper relationship with their clothing and accessories. \nSRJC’s Fashion Club will host a clothing swap\, where community members can bring up to three clean\, wearable and unwrinkled clothing or accessory items\, and pick out any new items they see. No contributions are required to participate. \nAccording to SRJC’s strategic plan\, the school aims to “Promote a community culture of sustainability.” That is achieved by promoting a culture of environmental wellness\, and economic and social equity.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Farm to...Landfill?!"
DESCRIPTION:Five Petaluma students spent the last several months tracing food from farm to table to trash\, interviewing farmers\, restaurant owners\, landfill staff\, food recovery organizations\, and city officials to understand why so much food ends up in a landfill instead of on someone’s plate. They filmed it all and turned it into a short film. \nOn Thursday\, October 29th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Blue Zones Project Petaluma\, the Regenerative Education Alliance is hosting the premiere screening of Farm to… Landfill?!\, followed by an intern-led presentation of the solutions they are proposing to reduce food waste in Sonoma County. It is an after-dinner event with light refreshments\, good conversation\, and the chance to hear directly from young people. \nWe would love to see you there. Seating is limited\, so please RSVP here by October 25. \nThis project was funded by Zero Waste Sonoma and is part of REA’s ongoing work to connect young people to food systems\, land stewardship\, and community.
